Dear union representatives,
Over the last three years, I dedicated much effort to strengthening our collective solidarity and enhancing recognition of care work. As a home care nurse, I witnessed the effects of social inequality, including poverty, racism, discrimination and violence, which affects women in particular. Driven by a sense of injustice and an urgent need to act, I want to continue my commitment as officer of the Status of Women, Sociopolitical, and Solidarity sectors.
I believe a union must carry the voice of its members, as well as people who have been made invisible and marginalized. Inspired by the FIQ’s deep values, I have promoted a more feminist, inclusive and supportive vision of unionism, which is essential to moving forward without leaving anyone behind.
I firmly believe in the power of influence. We have worked on several fronts to eliminate IL and to limit the negative effects of the centralizing reform underway. We intervened so that sexual violence and psychological harassment are no longer tolerated in the workplace. Faced with an anti-union government, we have refined our strategies, mobilized and developed alliances with community groups, other unions and coalitions.
When I arrived, we were just coming out of the pandemic, and members’ wounds were still raw. We had to use this anger to raise awareness and politicize members. Imagine the power that 80,000 people simultaneously demanding change have! Joining forces to counter the effects of devastating neoliberal policies on public services and the social safety net, particularly the public health network.
I share this vision with the union reps on the Status of Women, Anti-racism and PIMC committees. Our goals are clear: develop inclusive union practices and make our organization more representative of our members.
I carried our voices to the highest political and union spheres, and I will continue to defend our cause with determination. Our role as an agent of social change is so crucial with the rise of the extreme right and growing inequality. It is vital that we protect our gains and defend our basic rights.
I thank you for trusting in me and I will continue working with you.
